SHADOW MINISTER SEES INDIGENOUS SUCCESS IN HINCHINBROOK

LNP Shadow Minister for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Partnerships, Steve Minnikin, visited the Hinchinbrook electorate on Monday to see a number of local indigenous success stories.

Along with Hinchinbrook MP, Andrew Cripps, Mr Minnikin visited Girringun Aboriginal Corporation in Cardwell, Mungalla Station west of Forrest Beach and St Teresa’s College at Abergowrie.

Mr Cripps said he was proud to showcase the excellent examples of indigenous achievement and success in the Hinchinbrook electorate to his parliamentary colleague and Shadow Minister.

“Girringun is respected for its high standards of corporate governance, managing the Indigenous Rangers program and its cultural initiatives, including art and language” said Mr Cripps.

“Mungalla Station has been a success story for indigenous employment and training outcomes, land management and sustainable agriculture and diversification into tourism” he said.

“I also consider Abergowrie College to be a great example of a school that can take pride in providing terrific opportunities to young indigenous students to achieve their goals in life”.

“With indigenous issues, there is always plenty of coverage about what’s going wrong and what needs to be done, but it is also worth highlighting the success stories and what’s going well”.

Mr Minnikin said he was impressed with his visit to the Hinchinbrook electorate and grateful for the opportunity to visit Abergowrie College, Mungalla Station and Girringun Aboriginal Corporation.

“In particular, it was very encouraging to see the positive leadership being showed by indigenous people in these successful organisations to achieve these positive outcomes” said Mr Minnikin.

“It was great to see young indigenous people involved at Girringun through the rangers program, employed on Mungalla Station and given real opportunities to achieve at Abergowrie College”.

Mr Cripps thanked St Teresa’s College Abergowrie, Mungalla Station and Girringun Aboriginal Corporation, for hosting Shadow Minister Steve Minnikin in the Hinchinbrook electorate.
