Two weeks after being appointed as the Minister for State Development, Natural Resources and Mines, Anthony Lynham has still not visited Bowen, Abbot Point or the Galilee Basin to talk to locals about jobs and the single biggest potential investment in Queensland’s resources sector.

Visiting Bowen today, LNP Shadow Minister for Natural Resources, Mines, State Development and Northern Development, Andrew Cripps, said the resources sector and the people of Northern and Central Queensland were entitled to consider why Minister Lynham was missing in action. – how will Labor boost jobs for the area?

“The opening up of the Galilee Basin represents one of the most significant opportunities for economic growth in North and Central Queensland for a generation, representing many billions in potential investment and tens of thousands of potential jobs,” said Mr Cripps.

“The Bowen Basin has been a cornerstone of the Queensland resources sector for the last 30 years and the Galilee Basin has the potential to be a cornerstone for the next 30 years.

“Minister Lynham should be here on the ground to get the facts about one of the biggest issues in his portfolio and explain how he will deliver these jobs for Queenslanders.

“Labor’s lack of support for the resources sector and the infrastructure projects required for it to develop sent very negative messages to current and potential investors during the recent election campaign. The Minister has a lot of work to do to provide certainty to industry.”

Mr Cripps said new Labor MP’s in North and Central Queensland need to make their position clear and demonstrate their commitment to proper job-creating infrastructure and development.

“Queenslanders deserve to know if these new members stand for investment and jobs in their region or will they pander to extreme green lobby groups through the new Labor Ministers in George Street.

“After two weeks, the deafening silence from the new Labor Government and the key responsible Minister will not be filling locals with confidence.

“Anthony Lynham needs to talk to industry, visit Abbot Point and meet locals to understand how important the development of the Galilee Basin is for the State’s economy and jobs.”
